Saturday Special - Using Dylusion Products

Hiya Everyone, I did a product Review last week on the new Dylusions Journal and I wanted to show an Art Journaling Spread I did in this book. It's my first page so I wanted to make it special. Now that I broke the book in it's nice and messy! LOL

My first spread was created using all Dylusion Products. Sprays, Stencils and Stamps. With a little bit of Gesso thrown in. LOL

First off I sprayed Water on the right hand side page. Then I spayed three colors of the Dylusion Inks on it. I sprayed a little bit of water again and Closed the book really tight. When I opened it back up I now had ink on both sides of my spread. I then ran a Paper Towel on the roll through it.. This is important to kind of set the inks.. I don't blot with a paper towel I roll the whole thing. I dried the spread with my Heat Gun

Once dried I did the Ghosting Technique. This is done by putting a stencil down and spraying water through the stencil.. again I rolled my paper towel. Once dry you will see the stencil image coming through. This Technique is soooo cool!! 

I took another stencil and sprayed some inks through it this time. A few different stencils this way and a few different colors of inks.

Then I took some Gesso and one of the stencils and Stippled the Gesso through the Stencil.. It's hard to see in the picture as my lighting is terrible but the white of the Gesso with the inks looks really cool!

Now for some Dylusion Stamps .. I used the Stamp Sets Background Love and Doodle Parts. First using the leaves I stamped around my spread. I then did what is called over stamping. This is done by inking up your stamp. Then you stamp on a scrap piece of paper and then onto your spread. It gives a shadow effect.

When I'm working with Inks like the Dylusions I always use Archival Ink. This Ink will not run when more water or inks , paint etc is put over it.

Once the leaves were done I stamped the Mushrooms and the Flowers onto the Spread...

I then took some ink and sprayed it onto my Craft Mat. You need something waxy like. Something where the ink is going to stay on the top of it.. I took a small brush dipping into the ink and painted the mushroom and flowers.. Be careful a little inks goes a long way.

After stamping the flowers and mushroom I then stamped my Sentiment..After everything has dried I took a white pen.. A gel pen will work, the white Signo pen is good and also Rangers Inkssentials white pen is good also. All these pens will write over inks.. 

I set out to doodle over everything I could. Filling in the Mushrooms, my sentiment , the leaves and the flowers..

I had some ink left over on my craft mat so I stuck my
fingers in it and Flicked.
All over the spread. It's a great way not to waste the ink. LOL

Last but not least I took my Black Archival Ink and ran it around the Edges

Voila my first Journal Spread in my New Journal!! I love love this Journal by Dyan Reaveley.. I highly recommend it.

Friday Feature - Butterflies

Hello Friends.  Melody here with another Friday Feature.  Today I have a very quick and easy card for you, using several Tim Holtz products.

On a white card stock base, I swiped mustard seed, spiced marmalade, and barn door distress stains.

The butterfly silhouette is black card stock die cut with the butterflies on the edge die.

The sentiment, from good thoughts, is stamped in jet black archival ink.

I wanted the free-flying butterfly to really stand out from the rest, so I pulled a blue butterfly, die cut with mini butterflies movers & shapers die, from my stash.  I don't know what ink I used on it.  I glued it to a butterfly die cut from cereal box chipboard to give it more stability, and then popped up the wings with dimensional tape.  And I was done - easy peasy!  I hope you like it.

Technique Tuesday ~ Tips

Shrink Plastic tips:

Lightly sand both sides of the shrink plastic gently... first horizontally, and then vertically.. using a white acrylic (found in the beauty supply) sanding foam block. Wipe off the powdered residue.

Stamp your shrink plastic with archival ink, using a preheated heat tool, go over the stamped image quickly to dry the ink. Don't heat the ink too long, you don't want it to start shrinking. Now, cut out the image.

If you have an irregular image, coat edges with talcum powder to prevent the shrink plastic from sticking to itself. If you used talcum powder, our image many look grey after shrinking, just wipe the powder off the cooled down shrink piece with a piece of Kleenex. (don't use the one with lotion)

I like to shrink with a heat tool, in a small cardboard box. (a lid will work) Start with a preheated tool, keep moving your gun around, and don't get to close or the shrink plastic will get real hard, curl up, and won't shrink. To save the piece, let it cool completely and then reheat but not so close with the heat gun. Most of the time it will uncurl and flatten out. I always use the back of wood mounted stamp to flatten the image completely as soon as I turn off the heat gun. You can leave the pieces in irregular shapes if you don't want a flat look but depends on what you are doing and how you want to use your shrink plastic piece.  

 

Another option is to shrink your plastic in a Melting pot.

Most Everyone knows I'm an avid Art Journaler. I love to get messy with paints and inks when I Art Journal. I'm always looking for just the right Journal to work in.  One that will take a lot of wet and won't curl when wet .. I like sturdy Journals.. Well I think I found just the right Journal.. I bought the Dylusions "Creative Journal".  It arrived last night and I am delighted with it!

It has a beautiful Cover made of Chipboard which can easily be altered.. Then to beat all it has on the front Cover a sturdy Pocket to put all my Ephemera in.. So it's right there when I'm working. So many times I forget what I put away and don't use it...

The pages in the Journal are wonderful also!!  I haven't used it yet but I did watch a Video where 

Dyan Reaveley just uses tons of inks in it.. In the video it didn't curl at all!!

Saturday Special - Halloween Card

Well here I am again with a Saturday Special Tutorial. 

I created this Halloween Card using the 

Tim Holtz Halloween Stamp set 

"Mini Halloween" 

and the Tim Holtz 

Special Edition

 Autumn Distress Inks..

First I created my background using the Distress Inks and an Ink Blending Tool. Let it dry real good.I inked the edges with the Gathered Twigs Distress Ink and then Distressed the edges really heavy.. Then I took a stamp with writing on it and stamped the whole piece. Once that was dried I stamped the Skeleton with Embossing Ink and used Black Embossing Powder and heat set.Notice that I got extra hands on their. I liked that so I left it the way it was.
Sometimes your mistakes can add to a piece.

 I took a Silver Acrylic Paint Dabber and dabbed it onto my spider web stamp I stamped it. Do not press down real hard when your using paint on your stamps. It will smear and not stamp good. 
I then randomly stamped the blots that come with the set. Once that was done I stamped my bats in the two different places.. 

I took the "Happy Halloween" sentiment and tried to line it up right underneath the Skeleton. But the "H" didn't stamp.. So I thunked to myself  I said "Self, how can I fix this?" and then I said Hallah!! use some Black "Enamel Accents" and make the "H".. It came out pretty good if I don't say so myself! LOL.. 

I finished off the card with some Purple Cardstock and some Black Cardstock for the base.
Once that was on I used a glue stick and glued the spidery web cottony stuff onto it.

Friday Feature - Ornament

Hello, friends.  My name is Melody Schwartz (otherwise known as lacyquilter on the internet).  I'm so excited to share with you that I've been invited to do a regular Friday Feature here on the OWSE blog.

Today I have a simple Christmas ornament to help you get ready for the holidays.  I used the larger Tim Holtz rosette die, but these could easily be made with the smaller ones as well.  Since I wanted my ornament to shine, I knew I needed to use something different than regular card stock.

For each ornament, I started by cutting two pieces of thin card stock 2"x12" and then covering one side on each piece with silver foil tape.  I used an alcohol ink applicator with alcohol inks to coat the foil side, and then ran it through my die cutting machine with the rosette die.  I made one using red pepper and cranberry, one using denim and sail boat blue, and the third I left just silver.  I used hot glue to make the rosettes.

Because I wanted the ornaments two sided, each is made up of two rosettes, plus scallop circles in the center, making them more sturdy.  The centers are made from glossy card stock, also coated with alcohol inks, cut with a petite scallop circles die from Spellbinders, with the two layers glued back to back.  It was much easier to use a flat center than to try to glue the two rosettes back to back.  The centers on the silver one are left white.

Some silver cording made my ornaments ready to hang on the Christmas tree.

Color Reference Tags

You know, you don't always need the pressure of accomplishing an objective, to be creative. Sometimes it's fun to focus on learning more about technique or about the properties of your tools, or about color. This week, I'm focusing on learning more about using color!

After I stopped the video, I realized that I had switched the covers on Stormy Sky and Peacock Feathers. So the tag in the video is Stormy Sky and Salty Ocean! So I did a tag the right way with Peacock Feathers and Salty Ocean and put the two side by side here in the photo below so you can see the way it is supposed to look compared to the one I did in the video. There is a big difference!

Saturday Special

Hi all, every now and then I do something creative that I would like to share with you all. I will be doing this on Saturday's from now on.  When the creative mood strikes me. LOL

Here is a Piece I call my Believe Flower Collage.  It is a Mixed Media Collage.. Created on Strathmore

Mixed Media Paper.

I first covered a piece of mixed media paper with book paper and covered it with Gesso. Then I stamped text and images with black Archival Ink and added a thin layer of Gesso on top of that.

I sprayed at the top of the page with Glimmer Mist  and let the paint run down. After the paint was dry I added a tissue paper circle.Circled that with Black Acrylic Paint.  The dot's around the circle are made using Punchanella and distress ink. Then I started adding color using Pan Pastels. I filled in all the white spaces and also layered color on top of the glimmer mist and the orange circle.

I then Brayered a bit of White Acrylics all over the piece except for the tissue paper circle. I created the flowers using Tim Holtz's

Tattered Floral Die. 

The Stems were created by tearing strips of Tissue paper , soaking them with Gel Medium, rolling them like a snake and once dried adding Green Acrylic paint. The leaves were made with a Circle Punch and the Butterfly's are a Martha Stewart Punch. I used old book pages for both. I attached all with Gel Medium.

I then took some bubble wrap and purple acrylic paint and using it as a stamp stamped randomly.

I missed a technique for Technique Tuesday so today I'll share a tag I made using Dyan Reaveley stamps and Dylusions Sprays!

I used a combination of watercolor crayons and Distress Markers on the stamped images!

 Archival black ink was used to ink images.

Face Painting at the Orchard!

Happy Monday to you! This past weekend I spent the entire time painting kids and adults at a local orchard's fall festival. My partner Donna Harcourt and I started at 9am and finally cut off the line at 5:30pm each day. During that time we painted kids and adults faces and a few arms non-stop! And I do mean non-stop...no meals, no potty breaks, no sitting down even once! Our line is always a 30 minute wait...but they wait and they always go away smiling! It's a wonderful thing for a child to sit in your chair, a little shy and a little antsy and when we finish, their smile lights up the whole place!
